The Mitre Players is the amateur dramatic branch of the Trinity Mid Whitgiftian Association, the club for ex-pupils and staff of Trinity School. We maintain close links with the school, and actively encourage current pupils and staff to be involved with our productions. We’re very fortunate to have access to the school’s marvellous theatrical facilities, and to be able to use Trinity as the base for our major productions.
The Mitre Theatre is a well-equipped, modern studio theatre with raked seating for 140, and is home to our main theatrical and musical productions.
Trinity School of John Whitgift is an HMC independent boys’ school and educates aproximately 900 boys aged between 10 and 18. Trinity is one of three schools governed by the Whitgift Foundation (founded in 1596 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, John Whitgift), the others being Whitgift School at Haling Park and Old Palace School for girls. The school has a Co-Ed sixth form.
The school has been in its present position since 1965, when it moved from the centre of Croydon to a new complex of buildings and playing fields situated in the Green Belt. The grounds are some 27 acres in extent, and there are additional playing fields in Sandilands, ten minutes’ walk from the school.
The resources of the Whitgift Foundation enable the school to offer outstanding facilities. Great expansion from the original 1965 building provides excellent facilities, including the impressive Shaw Building, housing the Art, Design and Sports departments.
Trinity is very fortunate in having two magnificent theatres and a drama studio, all professionally equipped. As well as the Mitre Players shows, these house major Trinity Drama productions two or three times a year and many smaller events. Drama involves boys from all levels in the school, and for those who do not aspire to the stage there are stage crews, front-of-house, box office, lighting, and all the other facets of theatrical production.
How to find The Mitre Theatre.
Once at Trinity, it can sometimes be difficult to find somewhere to park and to find the correct entrance. The entrance to The Mitre Theatre is off the “Upper Car park”, which is the one by the large chimney (by the sports block). Walk down the pathway/road that is between the swimming pool and the sports halls. The Theatre entrance is ahead of you (about 100 metres).
